They must think we are stupid and of course, we are.

Have you noticed how quiet the rogue Gatwick airport drone story has gone?

The last I read, in addition to the couple arrested on suspicion of being the culprits, a damaged drone had been recovered nearby and was undergoing forensic tests.

I for one, never swallowed this story for a number of reasons. The main one, as a drone flyer myself, I know that even really expensive ones don't stay in the air for long before the battery runs out, twenty minutes if you're lucky, six or so if the drone is low end and maybe half an hour for really expensive ones.

Considering Gatwick was closed for three days, the perpetrator must have had a box full of batteries to cause as much menace as reported in the press and those aren't cheap either, seventy quid a pop for mine.

Despite the sightings, no one managed to photograph any drone activity over the airport.

Two people were arrested only to be released without charge 36 hours later, with no evidence available to support the suggestions in the papers that these was the morons who closed Gatwick. The press as usual grabbing at anything they can splash across their pages One can only hope the innocent couple can get their fair share of compensation for the savaging the press gave them.

Then came the statement about a drone being found damaged close to the airport. You wouldn't need forensics to work out if this was the rogue aircraft so widely reported. As there's been no further reporting, I believe this drone is a work of fiction and more likely the story put out to cover the arses of those tasked with finding one, to spare the red faces in Whitehall.

Ah yes, the politicians. I saw Amber Rudd stand up before the house of commons and say she'd been at Pentonville prison the week before and had been impressed by the fact they'd trained dogs to bark at drones to deter them.

I leave you to determine just how much of a deterrent a barking dog is to a pound or so of flying plastic and of course to the fact we entrust the running of this country to morons like Amber Rudd.

Snipers, yes, we were told that snipers had been sent in to Gatwick to bring down the drone. I'm not sure how big a bullet it, but I am assured by those who do know a little about ballistics, that the chances of hitting something as small as a drone at say a quarter of a mile, is pretty much nil.

If my drone flies more than say three hundred metres from my location, I lose sight of it and quite often can no longer hear it, so my only option is to hit the return home button.

The police have also stated there may never have been a drone after all.

So, we have a closed airport, thousands of people, stranded, diverted and generally fucked over. Helicopters sweeping the vicinity and the MOD with some apparent top secret drone jamming device and fuck all to point it at.

Such a lot of noise that went away as swiftly as it arrived.

Perfect opportunity to hide other goings on from the gaze of the press for a few days, Brexit maybe.

Put succinctly, it was an exercise in ineptitude.

Now the press have lost interest in the story, it's unlikely we'll ever see an explanation to this story, but it did say a lot about what a sad society we've become. A couple vilified by the press, before any evidence was found or charges made.

Politicians talking their usual rubbish. Military chasing shadows and of course one that can't be proven yet, the invention of a damaged drone being investigated.

Much as I hate Donald Trump, there is something in this fake news claim he constantly crows about.

As for shooting at drones, maybe this is the answer?
